Denison Alumni Association recognizes 2021 Hall of Fame inductees
DENISON, Texas (KXII) – The Denison ISD community will be celebrating not only a homecoming on Thursday night, but also a very special awards ceremony.
The reunion is a time to celebrate the pride of the school and honor its rich history, and that’s exactly what Denison will be doing Thursday night here at Munson Stadium.
âWe want to honor these people and let fellow Denisonians know how special Denison is,â said Rayce Guess, Co-Vice President of the Denison Alumni Association.
The Denison Alumni Association Hall of Fame will nominate 7 Distinguished Sports Awards: Dr Will Voelzke, Tyrell Buckner, Lakisha Gentry, Aaron Hunt, Vinny Rhodes, Tifney Kelly and Paul Fulton.
3 Distinguished Educator Awards: Lyndol Irby, longtime educator and director of Denison, Rachel Ramer and Katie Palmer, two former Scott Middle teachers who were good friends.
âBoth are exceptional teachers and I know they will look down on us both and smile. She wasn’t there for the awards, she wasn’t there for the awards. She just wanted to make a difference, âsaid John Palmer, husband of winner Katie Palmer.
And Major Jewel Butler Sr., graduated from Terrell High School in 1940, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award. He served during his military career as a Tuskogee Airman.
âThe most I learned from him about flying was how the formations were and everyone had to be careful and how you were flying 360 degrees,â said Jewel Butler Jr., son of Major Jewel Butler Sr. .
His son said he had heard stories about Denison and that he grew up visiting relatives in town every summer.
âWell for the whole Butler family, that means a lot. It means someone recognized what my dad did, so I really appreciate it. I think it’s a wonderful gesture. Excellent, thank you, âsaid Butler.
The awards ceremony begins around 7.15pm after the return parade and cheering rally. You can watch on Denison’s live broadcast here.
